Aircraft Chief on the USS San Jacinto
By Joseph Landy
Ensign George H. W. Bush was pilot of a TBM Avenger torpedo-bomber in Air Group 51 aboard the San Jacinto - a light
aircraft carrier of the INDEPENDENCE class. Aircraft chief Joe Landy was onboard from it's launching on September
26, 1943 at Camden NJ until it returned to San Francisco from Tokyo Bay by the great circle route after the war
ended. More frightening than the enemy was the two typhoons in which seven destroyers were sunk and the cruiser
Pittsburgh lost its bow. He will tell about his time aboard the SAN JAC.
