The 90th Jolly Rogers Bomb Group of the Fifth Air Force

Eugene Girer enlisted in the Air Force on January 7, 1942. He joined the 90th Jolly Rogers Bomb Group when it was created at Barksdale Field, LA in April 1942. (Barksdale Field is presently the base for the Air Force B2 bombers.)

The 90th followed General McArthur from New Guinea to Okinawa. Their first air battle was at Guadalcanal and their last battle star was for the air war against Japan. The major sites in between were Dutch New Guinea and the Philippines.

His wife, Shirlene, was trained and worked as a nursing aide with local Red Cross while in high school. Initially she took temperatures and pulses and changed bedpans. Later she worked at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital in the paraplegic ward giving back rubs to the wounded. She will add a postscript to his story.
