U.S. Submarine Operations in the Pacific Theater
Art Cable and Walt Hicinbothem, respectively PA State Commander and Secretary/Treasurer of US Submarine Veterans
of WWII, will talk about U.S. Submarine operations in the Pacific. After first outlining the role U.S. Submarines
played against the Japanese in the Pacific, they will then talk about life on board; the training, the crews, liberties
health, dangers, etc.
Finally, they will note the Submarine losses, both men and ships, weighed against the damage done to Japan: 3600
men and 52 subs versus the sinking of over 1300 ships (over five-and-a-half million tons of Japanese naval and
commercial shipping) and the denial of reinforcements and materiel to the wide spread territory controlled by the
Japanese.
Time permitting, they will list the myriad tasks U.S. Submarines undertook: rescuing pilots, photo-reconnaissance,
picket duty, support of guerillas, mine field penetration, weather reporting, surface gun action.
