Charles Bukowski (1920-1994)
...was one of America's best-known contemporary poets. Born in Andernach, Germany to an American soldier father and German mother, he came to the United States at the age of three. He published his first story in 1944 when he was 24 years old and began writing poetry at the age of 35. During his lifetime, he published more than 45 books of poetry and prose. All of his books have been published in translation in over a dozen languages and his worldwide popularity remains undiminished.
